“I always meet the client halfway, and I provide them with a safe space to openly express how they feel. I also try my best to be culturally responsive, as this permits the client to feel deeply understood.”

About Salma Abdou, LMHC-DP
Salma Abdou is a licensed mental health counselor (with diagnostic privilege) and clinical manager at Brightline’s Brooklyn clinic. Salma has worked as a care coordinator, teacher, therapist, and clinic manager throughout New York.
As a child, Salma struggled with anxiety. As conversations about therapy and mental health are taboo in Muslim American/Arab culture, she was somewhat ashamed of her mental health until she made the choice to become a therapist. This decision has enabled Salma to become a voice, a support, and a resource for many other Muslim American people who struggle with their mental health.
Salma provides evidence-based care using a variety of modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT).

What is a therapist?
Our therapists have earned their master's degree in social work, psychology, marriage and family therapy, or counseling. They are independently licensed. They are qualified to do therapy and diagnostic evaluations (when they have their diagnostic privilege credential for some license types). Therapists do not prescribe medication, but they are able to directly refer families who need that service to a Brightline psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner.
