Anxiety in kids — when to get support

Anxiety in kids: What’s healthy — and when to seek support
Kids and teens have a lot to be anxious about these days, but some anxiety is normal. In fact, some anxiety is actually good.
For example, when crossing the street, a person who is anxious about safety will look both ways and be more careful. Or a teenager might get a hunch that something feels off and leave a situation where they’re starting to feel unsafe.
However, due to a variety of genetic and environmental reasons, many kids experience anxiety that doesn’t match their situation. It can interfere with their well-being by disrupting their social, emotional, academic, and home life. (Which means it can impact parents’ routines, too.)
Kids experiencing high levels of anxiety may develop specific fears or phobias (e.g. separation or social anxiety) or more general worries leading to a constant need for reassurance. Sometimes, anxiety takes the form of physical symptoms (like muscle tension, headaches, sweating, or stomachaches), and, very often, anxiety can lead to avoidant or disruptive behaviors (like tantrums, outbursts, or refusing to participate in whatever situation they feel anxious about).
Anxiety is very much treatable — it’s something that can be recognized, treated, and lived with. And with Brightline, treatment is more accessible than ever for kids struggling with anxiety.
How does Brightline treat anxiety in kids?
Because anxiety is experienced on a spectrum, not every child who experiences anxiety needs clinical-level care. Some families get all the help they need through Brightline’s self-guided digital resources or short-term therapy programs informed by cognitive behavioral therapy. Sometimes a combination of the two gives a child the tools they need to manage their anxiety.
Kids diagnosed with anxiety disorders are likely to also benefit from a higher level of clinical intervention. For them, Brightline offers ongoing therapy and, if necessary, psychiatry services (e.g., medication management).
